To Suppress

In fury I attempted to squelch the raging red flame outlined against black sky,

only to realize I was throwing neatly cut planks into the fire itself.

I tried to capture the smoke in that big black sky with my small glass bottle,

until I was holding two jagged pieces cracked from the burning gray against black.

I tried to stuff a child’s spirit down the narrow dark passageway,

only to have it expand to burst forth from it’s jail into my eyes.

I tried to flee from the fires of hell leaping yonder,

but they keep chasing me down this crushed gray stone path.
